About The Royal Canadian Geographical Society

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society is dedicated to imparting a broader knowledge and deeper appreciation of Canada — its people and places, its natural and cultural heritage and its environmental, social and economic challenges.

The Society is one of Canada’s largest non-profit educational organizations and is funded primarily by membership fees and generous donations. The Society’s Board of Governors and its program committees are comprised entirely of volunteers.

Who We Are

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society was founded in 1929 with a mandate “to make Canada better known to Canadians and to the world”. This mandate is fulfilled mainly through publication of the Society’s magazines, Canadian Geographic in English and géographica in French, and through the Society’s geographic education programs, speaker series, research grants and expeditions programs.

Our Programs

The Society’s education program, the Canadian Council for Geographic Education, aims to increase the emphasis of geography in Canada’s schools and increase public awareness of the importance of geographic literacy.

The Society sponsors expeditions that expand the appreciation, understanding and knowledge of Canada’s geography.

The Speaker Series presents exciting illustrated talks by renowned explorers, scientists and photographers, all across Canada.

Research grants are awarded to university students and scientists enabling them to continue their studies and conduct geographical research in Canada.

History of the RCGS

Stories from Canadian Geographic magazine on the occasion of the Society’s anniversary:

The Summits of Canada – an expedition to climb the highest peaks in all provinces and territories. “Welcome to an historic expedition to tell Canadians and the world about Canada. The legacy of this quest is not the footprints we will leave on the mountains, but the impact on people’s lives. Together we can make a difference, one step at a time.”

— James Coleridge, Expedition Leader,
Summits of Canada
