Star-struck
A touch of celebrity fever hit The Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s College of Fellows Dinner. More than 330 people attended the event at Ottawa’s Château Laurier in November to hear guest speaker Alex Trebek, the long-time host of Jeopardy! and a recipient of the Society’s 2010 Gold Medal for his work in geographic education.

It was a bit of a homecoming for Trebek, who is a graduate of the University of Ottawa. He reminisced about the Château Laurier, where he got his first break in broadcasting working as a relief announcer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The job paid for his tuition and he was eventually hired fulltime by the CBC, along with another announcer. “I’m not sure what happened to the other fellow,” said Trebek, wryly. “His name was Lloyd Robertson.”
