About The Royal Canadian Geographical Society
New directions 2011
The Royal Canadian Geographical Society starts the new year with a new, yet familiar, executive director. André Préfontaine (right), president of Canadian Geographic Enterprises (CGE) and publisher of Canadian Geographic since 2006, takes over from Louise Maffett, who retired at the end of December after 15 years of service.

Préfontaine says his expanded role is to support recently elected president John Geiger and the Board of Governors as they set fresh goals for the Society.
“The consolidation and expansion of the Society’s educational programs are a high priority,” says Préfontaine. Another is to boost the Society’s public profile. “A lot of Canadians are not aware of the importance of the Society’s contribution to geographic literacy,” he adds.
The pairing of the executive director and publisher positions, says Préfontaine, reflects an increasing integration of the Society’s and CGE’s missions.
