Canada’s coolest school

When it comes to voicing an opinion on a vacation destination, a sunny beach down south may be the typical choice for most eighth graders, but this year, there’s an option much closer to home and just as thrilling.

Parks Canada, in collaboration with The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Nature Canada and The Historica-Dominion Institute, is holding the second annual Canada’s Coolest School Trip Contest, and one lucky grade-eight class will win an all-inclusive trip worth $52,000 to visit Nova Scotia this June.

The class that produces the best advertisement encouraging people to visit the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site (above) or Cape Breton Highlands National Park will travel to Cape Breton Island to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Louisbourg and explore beautiful Cape Breton Highlands National Park — the ultimate field trip. Public voting and a panel of judges will determine the winning class.

The contest is part of Parks Canada’s My Parks Pass Program, which aims to build a stronger connection between Canada’s youth and the nation’s natural and historic heritage. My Parks Pass allows every eighth grader in the country free access to more than 200 national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas throughout Canada.

Registration begins Jan. 7, 2013, and public voting starts on Mar. 4, 2013. Visit
