Michael Palin to visit Ottawa school

Veteran Comedian and Adventurer to meet with Local Seventh Graders

What: Geo literacy exchange between Grade 7 Students and Michael Palin
When: June 26th, 2013 at 9:45 a.m.
Where: Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School gym, 149 Berrigan Drive, Ottawa
Who: Michael Palin, Comedian, Adventurer and past-President of the Royal Geographic Society

Michael Palin likes geography. He’s seen our planet’s highest mountains in Nepal, trekked across the Sahara desert, visited active volcanoes in Russia, cruised down the Amazon River through the jungle, drifted in a hot‐air balloon over the Serengeti in Africa, and explored many of the world’s great cities. As a member of the legendary British comedy troupe Monty Python, he used his quick wit to make us laugh at lumberjacks, the Spanish Inquisition and a dead parrot. Now he uses humour to help connect with the people he meets as he travels. It seems humour is internationally understood and enjoyed by everyone.

Michael Palin is in Canada to receive The Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s (RCGS) Gold Medal, Canada’s highest honour in geography for Palin’s contribution to geographical literacy. Before he accepts his medal he wants to meet with Canadian kids and talk geography. He’ll meet with Grade 7 students from Longfields‐Davidson Heights School to exchange ideas and learn more about Canada. To help the kids and Palin along, they’ll explore Canada on the RCGS giant Parks Canada floor map that measures 10.7 m (35') x 7.9 m (26') to discover all the possibilities for summer vacation. To whet their appetites’ for adventure, Palin will tell them about a few of his own adventures around the world and give them some excellent reasons about why knowing a little geography makes us better citizens. Sounds heavy but not when you have Michael Palin delivering the message.
