Astronauts to attend college of Fellows Dinner

It’s not every night that you get to dine with an astronaut, let alone six of them. At this year’s Royal Canadian Geographical Society College of Fellows Dinner, a special evening is planned to celebrate the Society’s 85th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the annual dinner will be space-themed, in celebration of the Canadian Space Agency’s 25th anniversary.

The dinner will take place on Nov. 19 at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa. So far, six Canadian astronauts have confirmed their attendance, and it’s anticipated more will be coming.

Canadian Space Agency president Walter Natynczyk will give the keynote speech. While he won’t disclose any details about his talk, he does encourage people to support Canadian geographers and explorers. “We should be proud of all those who have made an extraordinary contribution to mankind through their innovation, through their discovery and through the pursuit of exploration,” he says.

The evening will also feature a medal ceremony for this year’s Society award winners, as well as a cocktail reception and silent auction. In previous years, more than 400 explorers, educators and geography enthusiasts have attended the dinner, which recognizes the importance of the Society’s work in making Canada better known to Canadians and the world.
