To recognize outstanding achievement, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society annually presents each of the awards below to deserving individuals.

We encourage you to submit nominations for the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Medal for Exploration, the Massey Medal, the Gold Medal and the 3M Environmental Innovation Award.

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION AWARD
The 3M Environmental Innovation Award was inaugurated in 2009 by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and 3M Canada to recognize outstanding individuals in business, government, academia or community organizations whose innovative contributions to environmental change are benefiting Canada and Canadians.

SIR CHRISTOPHER ONDAATJE


MEDAL FOR EXPLORATION
Established in 2013, the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Medal for Exploration recognizes singular achievements and the pursuit of excellence by an outstanding Canadian explorer or a non-Canadian for exploratory achievements within Canada.

MASSEY MEDAL
The Massey Medal was established to honour those who have contributed to the exploration, development or description of Canada’s geography.

The 2011 Massey Medal recipient is David Livingstone.

GOLD MEDAL
The Gold Medal was created to provide an opportunity for the Society to recognize a particular achievement by one or more individuals in the general field of geography; or a significant national or international event.

The 2012 Gold Medal recipient is world-renowned Canadian paleontologist Philip Currie.

CAMSELL MEDAL
The Camsell Medal recognizes outstanding volunteer service to The Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Only RCGS Fellows may nominate individuals for the Camsell Medal.

The Camsell Medal recipient for 2012 is Jean Fournier.

LITERACY AWARD
Many people work beyond the expectation of their professions toward heightening geographic literacy. This award is to recognize and honour their contributions.

The 2012 Geographic Literacy Award recipient is James Boxall.

MARTIN BERGMANN MEDAL
The Martin Bergmann Medal, established in 2012, recognizes achievement for “excellence in Arctic leadership and science.”

The Martin Bergmann Medal recipient for 2012 is Martin Bergmann.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II


DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL CEREMONY

The Society hosted a ceremony at the Army Officers Mess in Ottawa on April 2, 2012, during which Mr. Kevin MacLeod, Canadian Secretary to the Queen, presented Society recipients with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The Society had previously been selected by the Diamond Jubilee Medal program at Rideau Hall as a partner organization and was given an allotment of 30 medals.
