When some people move across the country, they drive. But after spending almost 5 years in Edmonton while Benoit completed his PhD in forest ecology at the University of Alberta, the Gendreau-Berthiaume family decided to move back to Montreal by… paddling.

Exchanging their car for a 17 foot Prospector Royalex lite canoe, swapping asphalt roads for rivers, Benoit, Magali and their 5-year-old son Mali will explore some of Canada’s most famous waterways from May 1st to the end of August 2015.

Besides the personal motivation of discovering the country through a traditional mode of transportation and sharing the experience with their son, Benoit and Magali also hope to help people from all over the world to discover what Canada has to offer–both in terms of landscapes and the people living in them. They want to spread education about the different watersheds, ecosystems and historically relevant river systems that stretch between Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

During this expedition they will paddle approximately 5000km, traveling on four rivers that are part of the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (North Saskatchewan River, Boundary Waters, French River and Mattawa Rivers) as well as two rivers nominated to this system (Saskatchewan River and Ottawa River).

Their final objective is to inspire others, even families with young children, to plan their own adventures.
