FATHER GOOSE: The WILD life of Bill Lishman

Bill Lishman aka Father Goose is a Canadian original. He’s the man who flew with Canada geese and was portrayed by Jeff Daniels in the movie Fly Away Home.

Bill will tell the story of how he earned the nickname Father Goose. He was one of the pioneers of ultralight flight in Canada and in 1988 became the first human to lead birds in formation. In 1993 he led a small flock of Canada geese from Ontario to Virginia. The unassisted return migration of these geese the following spring garnered world-wide attention that led to the creation of the hit feature film Fly Away Home. More recently, the process that he pioneered led to the restoration of an easterly flock of migrating whooping cranes.

A farm boy from Pickering Ontario, Bill struggled with a learning disability. His personal journey teaches us to embrace the unique qualities of all learners. Bill will take audiences on an autobiographical journey from a rural, one-room school house to success by learning in ways outside the normal classroom environment.

Bill Lishman is an artist, sculptor, filmmaker, author, art director, inventor, pilot, naturalist and entrepreneur. His presentation will include humorous descriptions of how several of his works of art came to be – including a full scale replica of Stonehenge from crushed cars! It’s not so hard to believe that this is the same man who built a 2,700 square foot, 21st century earth-integrated domed home located in southern Ontario.

Join The Royal Canadian Geographical Society in welcoming Wild Bill Lishman, who describes himself as “a man whose ideas are his next reality.”
