Expeditions Program

For many, the terms "geography" and "expedition" are synonymous. In fact, most Canadians are introduced to the discipline of geography through exposure to "geographic expeditions", as presented in popular and academic publications. Through expeditions, geographic appreciation, understanding and knowledge expand. To promote this tradition, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) supports an Expeditions Program to encourage and support geographic expeditions taking place largely within Canada, by Canadians.

Extending our current knowledge of Canada's geography through exploration and scientific expeditions, the RCGS has funded some major expeditions across the country. Deadlines for applications are March 1st and October 1st each year. How to apply.

Most recently funded by the RCGS:

Musicycle Tour — Derek Olive
The Musicycle Tour had one goal in mind: to show people that sustainable transportation doesn’t have to be a drag. Derek Olive hauled his guitar, amps and other equipment from Powell River BC to Halifax NS performing along the way.

Finding Farley Expedition — Leanne Allison and Karsten Heuer
The finding Farley expedition was a 6-month cross-Canada journey from Canmore AB by canoe, foot, supply ship, and sailboat to make good on Farley Mowat’s invitation to visit him at his Cape Breton farm. The route taken follows in the footsteps of Farley Mowat’s northern novels.

Previously funded by the RCGS:

Jay’s Great Canadian Canoe Quest, Jay Morrison set out in April 2006 to become the first person to paddle solo from the Atlantic Ocean to the Arctic Ocean in one season.

Summits of Canada Expedition — a team of climbers are climbing the highest summits in every province and territory including the climb of Mt. Logan in 2007. What is the highest summit in your province? For information on the expedition and when and where they will be in your province go to the website: www.summitsofcanada.ca

Mt. Vancouver Survey Expedition 2006. Peter Hudson, Tom Furst, Pierre Hungr and Matt Mueller are climbing from sea level to the peak of Mt. Vancouver in an attempt to accurately measure Mt. Vancouver using GPS technology and solve the summit height mystery.

The Rivière Denys 2005 Expedition canoed through the sub-arctic wilderness of northern Québec to Hudson Bay. The Expedition traced a challenging voyageur route pioneered in 1888 by A.P. Low, one of Canada's greatest explorers. Learn more at: www.saintdenysriver.info.
